Buzz of Yellowjackets livens Opera House this weekend

Sep 28, 2008

dac_and _hisbandVietnamnews - Song Hong will fill Ha Noi’s Opera House with the sounds of jazz this Friday night.

The show, Dem Vang (Yellow Night), will feature works by US jazz quartet, the Yellowjackets, whose Shades and Politics albums won Grammys for Best R&B Instrumental and Best Contemporary Jazz Recording in 1986 and 1988, respectively.

The Ha Noi-based six-member band will present eight pieces, including Evening Dance, Foreign Correspondent, River Waltz, Imperial Strut, Galileo for Jac, Indigo, Seven Stars and Whistle While You Walk.

According to saxophonist Quyen Thien Dac, whose father Quyen Van Minh is the band’s founder, the show is expected to bring a little "funk" to the otherwise formal performance space.

"I’m sure that audiences won’t sit quietly in their chairs, but will get up and move to the funky music," Dac, who graduated from the Berklee College of Music in the US, said.

Dac also stressed that the show was not for business purposes. It would be a social event, which will contribute to the development of contemporary music in the country.

"The money earned from ticket sales will be donated to flood victims in certain northern provinces," he said.

The Yellow Night show will start at 8pm at the Opera House. Tickets range from VND150,000-300,000 and are available at the Opera House, 1 Trang Tien, and the Jazz Club, 31 Luong Van Can Street.
